A 14-year-old boy from Cheshire has drowned while on holiday with his family in the United States, police have confirmed.

Mckinley Day, from Farndon, died in the Beaver river in Croghan, New York state, during an outing with friends and relatives on Friday.

Lewis County Sheriff’s Department said he was in a canoe when it tipped over.

An offduty state police trooper and his niece found him eight feet under water minutes after he called for help.

Efforts to revive him failed.

A spokeswoman for the sheriff’s department said: “He was out in a canoe with another person and it tipped over and the other person was able to swim to shore but he wasn’t.”

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “We are aware of the death of a British national in Croghan on 12 August.

“We are providing consular assistance. The death involved a minor.”
