A Briton has been killed and another kidnapped from a Kenyan island, the Foreign Office says.

Details are sketchy, and Kenyan police have revealed few details, but it is believed the couple were staying at beach resort north of Lamu island.

One police source said the Islamist group al-Shabab could be involved.

The resort is near the Somali border and Somali pirates could be involved, says a BBC reporter, although tourist resorts have not been targeted before.

Kenya police have said they have been on high alert in many areas of the country on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in the US.

The Foreign Office said it was investigating, but gave no more details.

It continues to advise against all but essential travel to within 30km (18 miles) of Kenya’s border with Somalia. There have been previous attacks by Somali militia into Kenya, it says.
