29 mins: NOOO!! scream the England fans as Wilkinson pulls a simple penalty to the right of the posts.

28 mins: Penalty to England for tight-head prop Figallo not binding at the scrum.

27 mins: Massive blow for Argentina as Contepomi is helped off. England kick the penalty to the corner and win the line-out, Argentina hold out, but England are awarded the put-in at a five metre scrum

25 mins: A good rumble from Cole gets England on the front foot but Thompson knocks on. A minute later Foden scythes through a gap as England finally cut loose, but Armitage is tackled 10m out and Leguizamon is penalised for not rolling away.

22 mins: Better from the Pumas, as Rodriguez finds the target with his third effort of the game, admittedly from closer in this time.

21 mins:PENALTY: England 3-6 Argentina

20 mins: England concede ANOTHER penalty, their sixth. Sheridan does not fully support his weight at a ruck, and England are definitely getting on the wrong side of referee Lawrence.

18 mins: Contepomi misses the kick. It was a tricky effort, but the Pumas have now missed a possible nine points – can they afford to be that profligate?

17 mins: Armitage and Ashton counter-attack but Ashton is penalised for not releasing in the tackle. In the stands, England manager Johnson looks less than impressed by the decision of referee Bryce Lawrence.

15 mins: England concede a fourth penalty, Haskell not rolling away, and their ill-discipline could be costly, but Rodriguez misses a second long-range effort.

13 mins: Wilkinson pins the Pumas back in their half with a kick to touch.

11 mins:PENALTY: England 3-3 Argentina
Wilkinson, the all-time leading points scorer in World Cup history, drills a tricky kick between the posts to level the scores.

10 mins: England finally secure possession in the Argentina half and a high tackle by Roncero on full-backs Foden earns Johnson’s side a penalty.

8 mins: England concede their third penalty in quick order but Stade Francais full-back Rodriguez misses from long range.

6 mins:PENALTY: England 0-3 Argentina
Argentina had already been awarded a penalty and Contempomi wobbles the ball between the sticks to give the Pumas the lead.

4 Mins: England hold their own at the scrum and scrum-half Wigglesworth scrags the Pumas number eight, but England then fall offside and Contepomi drills the penalty deep into England territory. Argentina then win the resulting line-out and Conetmpomi attacks. Haskell hauls him down but they attack again and blind-side Cabello is stopped inches short as he tries to dive over a close-range ruck.

2 mins: England lose their first line-out throw but they get another go and this time Tom Croft claims it. Jonny Wilkinson fires the ball into midfield but Mike Tindall drops the ball and Argentina are awarded the put-in at a scrum.

1 min:Felipe Contepomi kicks off. Louis Deacon claims the ball safely and Mike Tindall bangs the ball deep.

0930: The anthems have been belted out, the crowd is in full voice and kick-off is imminent…

0925: Five minutes to kick off and the teams are taking the pitch in the new indoor stadium in Dunedin. Key area – The scrum. More than any team bar Georgia the Pumas base their game around the scrum, and the grizzled Argentina front row will be looking to put their team on the front foot by putting England, literally, on the back foot. Hold their own there, win the breakdown and the line-outs, and England will feel they are on their way.

0912: England approach the game with a degree of confidence. They are the reigining Six Nations champions, although they failed to clinch a Grand Slam after losing to Ireland in their final game of the championship. They beat Wales at Twickenham in the first of their World Cup warm-ups, and although they lost to the Welsh in Cardiff in the rematch, they gained a measure of revenge for their Six Nations disappointment by defeating Ireland in their final game before heading to New Zealand.

0906: Argentina will at least be fresh going into the game, having played only one warm-up Test, the defeat by Wales. The Pumas, currently ranked ninth in the world, have only played 19 internationals since their thrilling run to third in 2007. Entry into the Tri-Nations, as it currently is, in 2012 cannot come quickly enough as they seek regular competition.

Dave, an Englishman in Belfast, via text on 81111: Thrilling finish there in the Scotland game, even if it was a poor performance. Delighted to see Scotland win though, hoping for the same from England later on.
0857: England are not the first of the home nations in action – Scotland opened their campaign by defeating Romania, who needed to beat Uruguay in a play-off to reach the finals. It was a nervy encounter for the Scots though, who had to come from behind…
0840: What is the expert view? England legend Jeremy Guscott has run the rule over the two teams and can read his analysis here. If want to read up more generally on the World Cup, why not peruse our handy team guide?

0835: To get involved can either text (81111) or tweet (#BBCRWC) – how do think it’s going to go? Will Martin Johnson’s men open in style, or are England fans in for a nervous morning?

0830 BST: Morning all, for England fans (and those from Argentina of course) the waiting is over. Four years after their unlikely march to the World Cup final in France, and eight years after they triumphed across the ditch in Australia, Martin Johnson’s men launch their bid for World Cup glory in Dunedin. They open their campaign against an ageing but battle-hardened Argentina side captained by Dr Felipe Contepomi, formerly of Bristol and Leinster. England will be hoping to avoid the fate of France, who lost to the South Americans in the opening game of the 2007 World Cup.
