Tank assault on Syria’s Deir al-Zor kills 20: group (Reuters)

AMMAN (Reuters) – Syrian forces killed at least 20 civilians on Sunday in a tank assault on the eastern city of Deir al-Zor to quell protests against President Bashar al-Assad, a grassroots activists’ group said.

The Syrian Revolution Coordinating Union said in a statement that most casualties were in the al-Joura district of the city, where tank fire has concentrated in the assault which began early on Sunday on the city situated on the Euphrates river in a province bordering Iraq’s Sunni heartland.
