The Prominence Of The Geek Is Under The Radar But That Does Not Mean That They Are Not Crucial
It is a pity that geeks are seen as being in someway peculiar or bizarre. Our culture is now at a moment where it relies almost completely upon those who would be seen as geeks by those who consider themselves to be un-techie. And yet for everything from search engine optimisation to creating the most useful and intricate IT systems it is the mass of nerds that turn them out. When consider the least geeky sorts such as armed forces personnel, their lives depend upon the amazingly clever weapons they use. The Apache helicopter for instance is buily to identify and prioritise hundreds of targets in one go and can launch a missile that will sort out it’s own point of entry into the building it’s been pointed at. Systems built by the nerds.
If someone was a low level techie, then working for an affordable SEO company would be perfect as a technical knowledge isn’t necessary but if are highly skilled already but wanting to do more, then getting into software consultancy is the direction to go. But, focussing on search engine optimisation as a hugely crucial operation, getting the client’s web visible to their potential buyers is the make or break between the company surviving or not. The benefit a proper affordable SEO company gives is that for a known budget, the links to the webpages can be shown to unlimited visitors. Ad-word campaigns with a maximised daily limit have the embedded disadvantage that when the maximum limit is attained, the link is no longer shown and still pay whether the visitor does business on the webpages or not.
Having done, and continuing to do, software consultancy as well, I can say with some gravitas that it is far less satisfying although the best fun bit is having written the program, testing it and discovering the parts that broken and changing them. That really is a joy despite the frequent annoyance when can’t work out why it isn’t doing what it’s supposed to be as after a bit just know that the fix is very obvious and looking in the face.
But the software consultancy I mainly do now is advising small companies on the software they employ in their companies and how they can sort out the best and latest versions and updates. So many firms I have worked for use prehistoric versions which aren’t really up to the job, especially when they pass files and data with clients, suppliers and other interested parties as the day will come when they can’t access a file properly. Which can be embarrassing at best, and dangerous at worst because there will be a stop on any work until the position is fixed.
But the best thing by far, is search engine optimisation simply as it is such an important service and although it is a bit of a black art, it is pretty straightforward and immensely rewarding. And, as long as one keeps on being an affordable SEO company, the relationship with the customer should be a long one as the task is continuous to get the client’s pages at the summit of the search results and then keep it there. And because the nature of the task is dependanct on results then outgoings can be controlled, and if needed, more pages can be supplemented to the SEO portfolio.
The customers could be the sophisticated people known among the population, they could be the epitome of cool and sophistication, but it’s the nerds that keep them supported but, happily they will be well out of the way, hidden but indispensible.
